Week 53 Explained: Why 2026 Has 53 Weeks
Most years have 52 weeks. 2026 has 53. The extra one, week 53, runs from Monday 28 December 2026 to Sunday 3 January 2027, so New Year's Day 2027 falls in week 53 of 2026, not week 1 of 2027.
That matters to anyone who plans, reports or gets paid by the week. Diaries printed with 52 weeks run out early, spreadsheets that assume 52 weeks break, and teams that say "see you in week 1" can end up a week apart. Here is how week numbers work, why some years get a 53rd week, and what to check before January.
How week numbers are counted
Most of the world uses the ISO 8601 standard. Its rules are short:
- A week starts on Monday and ends on Sunday.
- Week 1 is the week that contains the year's first Thursday. Put another way, it is the week that contains 4 January.
- Every week belongs wholly to one "week-year", even when it straddles 31 December.
The Thursday rule means a week belongs to whichever year holds most of its days. It also means the first few days of January can belong to the previous year's last week, and the last few days of December can belong to the next year's week 1. For example, 29 to 31 December 2025 were part of week 1 of 2026.
The United States commonly uses a different convention. Weeks start on Sunday, and week 1 is whichever week contains 1 January. The two systems often disagree by one. Sunday 27 September 2026 is week 39 under ISO but week 40 under the US system. When a date and a week number have to match across teams or countries, say which system you mean.
Why 2026 gets a 53rd week
A year has 365 days, which is 52 weeks and one day (two in a leap year). Those spare days add up, and every so often the calendar has to fit in a whole extra week.
Under ISO 8601, a year has 53 weeks when 1 January falls on a Thursday, or when a leap year starts on a Wednesday. 1 January 2026 was a Thursday, so 2026 qualifies.
It happens 71 times every 400 years, roughly every five or six years. The recent and upcoming 53-week years are:

Who notices week 53
Planners and diaries. Many weekly planners print 52 numbered weeks. In 2026 the last one will stop at week 52, and the week between Christmas and New Year will need its own page.
Payroll. 2026 has 53 Thursdays, so anyone paid weekly on a Thursday gets 53 paydays this year instead of 52. Employers who divide an annual salary into weekly amounts should check how their payroll handles the extra run.
Retail and finance. Many retailers use a 52/53-week financial year built from whole weeks, so a 53rd week gets added every five or six years. Comparing a 53-week year with a 52-week year without adjusting makes sales look better than they were.
Reports and dashboards. Anything grouped by week number needs a slot for week 53. A chart with 52 columns, or a formula that treats week 53 as an error, will drop the last few days of the year. Using a date's calendar year alongside its ISO week number causes a related bug: 1 January 2027 is in week 53, and pairing that with 2027 files it under "week 53 of 2027", a week that doesn't exist.
Schools, shifts and sprints. Rotas and sprint plans that repeat on a fixed number of weeks can drift by a week at the turn of the year if week 53 isn't in the schedule.
Checking week numbers without the maths
For a quick answer, check today's week number on WeekNumber.info. It shows the current ISO week and the US week side by side, with the start and end date of each.
In a spreadsheet, use the ISO function rather than the default one. In Excel and Google Sheets, =ISOWEEKNUM(A1) returns the ISO week number. The older =WEEKNUM(A1) uses Sunday-start weeks by default and will not match ISO around New Year.

- Confirm which week-numbering system your team, clients and software use.
- Check that planners, templates and dashboards have a week 53 for 2026.
